According to the Shariah, the husband is obliged to provide his wife with everything necessary. And to be provided for by a husband is one of the basic rights of a wife. The word «nafaqah» literally means «spending». As a Sharia term, the word is used in the sense of «the husband’s expenses for the maintenance of the family.» That is, providing the wife with food, clothing and housing.
