Heroes Among Us: Damir and Fevziye Yakubov – A Family of Chornobyl NPP Liquidators

Exactly 40 years ago, on April 26, 1986, the world was shaken by the largest man-made disaster – the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The tragedy claimed and destroyed hundreds of thousands of human lives. Among the liquidators of the consequences of the Chornobyl accident were also Crimean Tatars. Among them, a unique case – the family of Damir and Fevziye Yakubov, who had to work in the exclusion zone from the very first days after the disaster. Great responsibility fell on the shoulders of 27-year-old Captain of the Soviet Army Damir Yakubov, then head of the automotive service of the 25th Brigade – he was in charge of 8000 people and 1700 units of equipment.
