September 11, 1988 is one of the darkest days in Crimean Tatar National movement history. On this day 37 years ago, authorities brutally dispersed a peaceful demonstration of Crimean Tatars in the urban settlement of Lenino. Dozens of casualties and arrests — as many veterans of the national movement recall, this action was unprecedented in the level of violence applied by security forces: nothing like this had happened before or since. Direct participants of those events share their memories with us.
