On this day in 1921, the Autonomous Crimean Soviet Socialist Republic was created. It was called the autonomy of the Crimean Tatars within the RSFSR. Crimean Tatars were promoted to leadership positions, official business was conducted in the Crimean Tatar language, and the national press developed. However, by the late 1920s, repressions against the intelligentsia began, reaching their peak in the 1930s. After the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944, the republic’s history was cut short, and the Crimean autonomy was transformed into an oblast.
