On October 7, 1987, a group of Crimean Tatars — about 300 people — organized themselves from Taman. The protesters planned to reach Aqmescit. They called their action the Taman march, the purpose of which was to draw attention to the problem of Crimean Tatars. The activists had only been able to walk 7 kilometers, but they had achieved their goal: by the evening the whole world knew about the Taman march.
