At the end of the 19th century, the outstanding orientalist, ethnographer and archaeologist Vasily Radlov was the first scientist to begin recording the folklore of the Crimean Tatars. It is to him that we owe much that a large number of Crimean Tatar folk tales, legends, traditions, anecdotes and destans have survived to this day.
