Kemal Karpat: World-Famous scholar with Crimean Tatar roots

Kemal Karpat is a world-famous Turkish historian of Crimean Tatar origin. When a decree came out in Turkey on conferring names, he, as a young man, but having already had many difficulties, chose for himself the name of the very famous mountain system, the Carpathian, thus, wishing to show his strength and fortitude.Part of his ancestors from the paternal side came from Ackerman (former name of modern Belgorod — Dnestrovsky) and from Budzhak, eastern part of which once belonged to the Crimean Khanate. Matrilineal ancestors came from Crimea.
