Henryk Sienkiewicz – Nobel Laureate With Tatar Roots

Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1915) – an outstanding Polish writer, one of the main realists of the 19th century, known for historical novels such as «Quo Vadis», «The Teutonic Knights», «With Fire and Sword», and others. Few know that the writer’s ancestors on his father’s side were Lipka Tatars – descendants from the Crimean Khanate and the Golden Horde, who settled in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1905, Sienkiewicz received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his «outstanding merits as an epic writer».
