The prominent poet and prose writer Bulat Okudzhava is one of the few representatives of the Soviet intelligentsia who supported the return of the Crimean Tatar people to Crimea. On July 14, 1987, Okudzhava sent a letter to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in support of the Crimean Tatars.
