He knew dozens of languages, was a founding figure in the creation of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and played a key role in standardizing the Ukrainian literary language. At the same time, Agatangel Krymsky was an Arabist and Orientalist who studied Crimean Tatar culture. He called himself a Crimean Tatar, for which he faced repression during the Soviet era.
