Vatan avası is a revival of tradition

In the 1960s, when Crimean Tatar national movement started developing, the tradition of collecting money to hold various events for the return to the homeland appeared in places of exile. But in order not to raise suspicions with the KGB, they did it… at weddings. More recently, this folk tradition has begun to revive. Now the money is being collected to help needy children.
