After the Bolsheviks’ hopes for a proletarian revolution in Western Europe were not realized, the USSR turned its course toward the East. Crimean Tatars were to become one of the conduits of communist ideas in the Turkic world, for which the Party introduced the policy of so-called «korenization» (in Crimea more narrowly called «Tatarization») – the Crimean ASSR was created as a Crimean Tatar republic within the RSFSR, and the Crimean Tatar language was granted the status of a state language. It all ended in 1944, with the forced deportation of the indigenous people. We will tell you in our story about what the status of the Crimean Tatar language was in the first decades of the Soviet project.
