Soap for the Ottoman Empire Was Mined in Crimea

Kil – blue clay found only in Crimea – was in high demand in the Ottoman Empire. It was mined in large quantities on the peninsula and used as soap and shampoo. The unique property of kil – its ability to absorb fat – allowed it to be used for washing clothes, degreasing wool, and in cloth felting. In the Crimean Khanate, it was one of the main export products.
