The Crimean War (1853-1856) left a noticeable mark on the culture of the participating countries. «The first modern war», as historians call it, is remembered for its unprecedented mass coverage of the course of military operations in the media using telegraph and photography. Turkish soldiers in Crimea introduced Europeans to cigarettes, and the cold Crimean winter brought the Crimean Tatar word «balaclava» to the English language. This war is still discussed, articles, books and even songs are written about it. Filmmakers took inspiration from the events of the Crimean War.
