After Deportation, Nearly All Toponyms Were Replaced in Crimea

Over a thousand Crimean settlements were renamed after the forced deportation of Crimean Tatars. This occurred in the 1940s in several stages. The topographers of that time showed limited imagination: thus appeared Karasi instead of Karasu, Topolyovka instead of Toply, 4 Ivanovkas, 2 Urozhaynayas, 2 Trudolyubovkas, and even Lokhovka on the peninsula’s map.
