Before the deportation, talking the Crimean Tatars although not banned in the Soviet press, was already a very sensitive thing at the time — accusations of «bourgeois nationalism» and political unreliability were often directed at almost everyone who touched on this topic. Soviet censorship did not ignore the artist, academician Nikolai Samokish, whose painting «The Resettlement of Crimean Tatars to Turkey at the End of the 18th Century» became the cause of a major scandal in 1940.
