Crimean Tatars in Dobruja in the Late 19th – Early 20th Centuries: Culture and Education

In the late 19th century, the Muslims of Dobruja faced a choice – to leave for the receding Ottoman Empire or to integrate into Romanian society, whose authorities declared equality of nations and religions. From the 1870s, the construction of national and religious schools began, numerous Turkic-language newspapers and magazines were published, and the Crimean Tatar diaspora actively participated in the public and political life of the region.
