The Ottoman Empire and Persia under the Safavid dynasty often fought over trade routes in the buffer territory between the South Caucasus, Iranian Azerbaijan and Iran. Most of these wars were fought by vassal states of both empires. The Crimean Khanate was the most important element of the coalition in the eastern campaigns of the Ottoman Empire.
