The Pillow is a Symbol of Home for 87-Year-Old Alie Mazinova

In 1944, six-year-old Alie Mazinova was among hundreds of thousands of Crimean Tatars forcibly deported from Crimea. On that night, she took with her a pillow made and gifted by her uncle. She kept it throughout her years in exile. Decades later, when Alie-khanym returned to her homeland, the pillow remained with her. Today, at 87, she still clings to this pillow—the same one she held as a sleeping child on that fateful May night.
