Amet Berber’s childhood lasted only 8 years. He was born in 1936 in sunny Uskut. But the war, and then the deportation of 1944, interrupted the peace of the family, in which six children were growing up. Loss, hunger, and hard labor in a foreign land did not break young Amet. He carried his longing for Crimea through the decades and in 1990, already a grown man, returned to his native land together with his wife Gulhaniye and children. Today, Amet Qartbaba (grandfather) is 90 years old, and he lives surrounded by the warmth and love of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
