On the map, Yalta, Stary Krym, and Mangush can be found not only in Crimea. In 1778, on the initiative of Catherine II, Christians, including Armenians and Greeks – both Rumai and Urums – were resettled from the peninsula to the Azov Sea region. In their new locations, they gave villages and towns familiar Crimean names. Among the reasons cited for the resettlement of Christians from Crimea are the Empress’s desire to strengthen presence in the southern regions and to weaken the economy of the Crimean Khanate.
