This work is often called the «principal book of the Turkic world.» Mahmud al-Kashgari’s (c. 1029 — c. 1101) «Divan Lughat al-Turk» («Compendium of the Turkic Dialects») is a unique encyclopedia of the Turkic world, remarkable both in scope and content, containing extensive material not only on language but also data on settlement patterns, worldview, and daily life of ancient Turkic peoples. UNESCO is commemorating the 950th anniversary of this world cultural treasure in 2024-2025.
