In Soviet times, some prominent cultural figures used to send their appeals to the authorities with the request to solve the Crimean Tatar problem. Among them was Bulat Okudzhava. July 14, 1987 the poet sent a letter in support of the Crimean Tatars to the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union.
