Crimean Tatars Participated in the Construction of the Baghdad Railway

The Baghdad Railway – part of a railway line that was supposed to connect Berlin and Baghdad – was one of the most ambitious engineering projects of the late 19th century. The development of transport in the region would allow Germany to strengthen its influence in the Middle East, which caused tension in Europe that eventually led to World War I. For the history of the Crimean Tatar diaspora in Turkey, this construction project became not only a source of employment but also a decisive factor in the settlement of refugees from Crimea in the Eskişehir region.
