Growing Chairs – A Unique Tradition of the Crimean Tatars

Did you know that from ancient times, Crimean Tatars grew orchards in the middle of the forest? They were called chairs (or çayır). Cultivated varieties of fruit trees were grafted onto wild rootstocks. Pears, apple trees, and dogwood grew almost in the wild without regular watering or fertilization.
